Advanced CT with Contrast Services at NTxDI

North Texas Digital Imaging (NTxDI) delivers comprehensive CT with contrast services using our state-of-the-art multi-slice CT scanner. Our board-certified radiologists provide detailed, contrast-enhanced imaging that enables precise diagnosis and treatment planning for complex medical conditions throughout Mesquite and the greater Dallas area.

What is CT with Contrast?

CT with contrast combines advanced X-ray technology with iodine-based contrast agents to create detailed cross-sectional images of your body. The contrast dye enhances visibility of blood vessels, organs, and abnormalities, providing significantly more diagnostic information than standard CT scans alone.

Abdominal & Pelvic Evaluation

  • -Appendicitis and acute abdominal pain
  • Kidney stones with obstruction assessment
  • Liver lesions and gallbladder disease
  • Pancreatic masses and inflammation
  • Bowel abnormalities including diverticulitis

When is CT with Contrast Recommended?

Your physician may order a CT with contrast to evaluate:
  • Cancer Detection & Staging
  • Tumor identification and precise location mapping
  • Cancer staging to determine spread and treatment options
  • Treatment monitoring to assess therapy effectiveness
  • Post-surgical evaluation for recurrence detection
  • Biopsy guidance for accurate tissue sampling

Vascular Assessment

  • Pulmonary embolism detection in lungs
  • Aortic aneurysms and dissections
  • Arterial blockages and stenosis-
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Stroke evaluation and blood flow assessment

Neurological Assessment

  • Brain tumors and metastases
  • Stroke evaluation with perfusion imaging
  • Brain infections and abscesses
  • Multiple sclerosis flare-ups
  • Head trauma complications

What to Expect During Your CT with Contrast

Before Your Exam

Preparation Instructions

 Fasting Requirements:

  • Fast 4-6 hours  before most contrast CT exams
  • Clear liquids allowed  up to 2 hours before scan
  • Medications  can be taken with small sips of water

Important Safety Questions

Inform our staff if you have:

  • Kidney disease  or reduced kidney function
  • Diabetes  especially if taking metformin
  • Previous contrast reactions  or allergies
  • Asthma  or severe allergies
  •  Heart conditions  including heart failure
  • Multiple myeloma  or sickle cell disease
  • Pregnancy  or possibility of pregnancy
  • Recent contrast studies  within 48 hours

Medication Considerations

 Metformin Management:

  • Hold metformin on the day of the procedure and 48 hours after
  • Resume only after  kidney function is confirmed normal

During Your Procedure

   The Examination Process

  • IV Placement: Small IV catheter inserted in arm for contrast injection
  • Positioning: You’ll lie comfortably on CT table
  • Scout Images: Initial non-contrast images taken
  • Contrast Injection: Iodine contrast administered through IV
  • Enhanced Imaging: Multiple scans during different contrast phases
  • Total Time: Most exams completed in 10-30 minutes

Hydration Guidelines:

  • Drink plenty of water  the day before your exam
  • Well-hydrated patients  have better contrast tolerance
  • Avoid dehydration  which can affect kidney function

Important Safety Questions

Inform our staff if you have:

  • Kidney disease or reduced kidney function
  • Diabetes especially if taking metformin
  • Previous contrast reactions or allergies
  • Asthma or severe allergies
  • Heart conditions including heart failure
  • Multiple myeloma or sickle cell disease
  • Pregnancy or possibility of pregnancy
  • Recent contrast studies within 48 hours

Other Medications:

  • Continue most medications unless instructed otherwise
  • Blood thinners generally continued
  • Diuretics may be held to prevent dehydration

What You'll Experience

  • Warm sensation  throughout body during contrast injection
  • Metallic taste  in mouth lasting 30-60 seconds
  • Feeling of warmth  in pelvic area (normal sensation)
  • Possible nausea  (mild and brief)
  • IV removal  immediately after scan completion

After Your Exam

Immediate Recovery

  • Observation period  of 15-30 minutes for contrast reactions
  • Drink plenty of fluids  to help eliminate contrast
  • Resume normal diet  and activities
  • Monitor for delayed reactions  over the next 24 hours

Specialized CT with Contrast Studies

CT Angiography (CTA)

Specialized vascular imaging for:

  • Coronary CTA  – heart artery evaluation
  • Pulmonary CTA  – lung blood clot detection
  • Carotid CTA  – stroke risk assessment
  • Renal CTA  – kidney artery evaluation
  • Peripheral CTA  – leg artery assessment

Safety & Contrast Considerations

   Contrast Agent Safety

  • Modern iodinated contrast agents are very safe with:
  • Low reaction rates  (less than 1%)
  • Mild reactions  when they occur
  • Immediate treatment  available if needed

Rare, Serious Reactions:

  • Allergic reactions  requiring immediate treatment
  • Kidney function changes  in susceptible patients
  • Contrast extravasation  (leakage at IV site)

Contrast Elimination

  • Contrast naturally eliminated  through the kidneys within 24 hours
  • Increased hydration  speeds the elimination process
  • Normal urine appearance  may temporarily change

CT Enterography

  • Enhanced bowel evaluation for:
  • Crohn’s disease  activity assessment
  • Small bowel tumor detection
  • Inflammatory bowel disease  monitoring
  • GI bleeding  source identification

Triple-Phase CT Liver

  • Advanced liver evaluation:
  • Hepatic masses  characterization
