Before Your Exam

General Preparation

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
  • Remove jewelry from the area being examined
  • Bring previous imaging studies for comparison
  • Continue regular medications unless instructed otherwise

Specific Preparations by Exam Type

Abdominal Ultrasound:

  • Fast 8-12 hours before your exam for optimal imaging
  • Clear fluids allowed until 2 hours before exam
  • No smoking 2 hours before study

Pelvic Ultrasound:

  • Drink 32 ounces of water 1 hour before exam
  • Do not empty bladder until after imaging
  • Full bladder required for transabdominal imaging

Obstetric Ultrasound:

  • First trimester : Full bladder required
  • Second/third trimester : Follow specific instructions
  • Bring previous ultrasound reports if available

Vascular Ultrasound:

  • No special preparation for most studies
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to examination area
  • Avoid caffeine 2 hours before certain vascular studies
